Geothermal hydronic heating and cooling

Geothermal Hydronic Heating and Cooling Melbourne

Geothermal heating pumps, often referred to as geo-Exchange, ground-source, or water-source heat pumps, have been in use for over 50 years.

These ground sourced heat pumps take advantage of the ground’s natural temperatures to provide heating and cooling.

A geothermal hydronic heat pump uses the temperature from the Earth as heat exchange and not the air temperatures like conventional heat pumps, which results in a more stable coefficient of performance (COP).

Many parts of Victoria experience extreme seasonal temperature changes, from stifling summers to freezing winters. But just 1.5m below the Earth’s surface the temperature stays relatively consistent.

This consistent temperature means your property can have reliable, comfortable heating or cooling all-year round.

What Types of Geothermal Heating are Available?

A ground source heat pump uses one of the three following exchange methods.

Horizontal Loop

This method is the most cost effective for residential projects where large amounts of land are available for trenching. Due to the large amount of land required it is not recommended for commercial applications with a high KW load. For most residential homes you require up to one acre of land & the loops would be buried 1.5-2m deep.

Vertical Loops

This method is recommended for large high end suburban homes with minimal land available to large scale commercial projects. Site access for a drill rig is required. Vertical loops cause minimal disturbance to the land. The holes are drilled 6m apart to a depth ranging from 80-200 meters depending on the project.

Pond/Lake Loop

This method requires access to an adequate body of water & is the lowest cost option available as there is no trenching or drilling required. Pond/Lake loops often have a far greater COP than the other two methods.
